Back in 2019, only about <\/span><b>6.5% of private-sector workers in the U.S.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said they primarily worked from home, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/btn\/volume-13\/remote-work-productivity.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most jobs still happened in offices, stores, or other physical workplaces. Working remotely was something mainly seen in a few tech jobs or freelance roles, not something you&#8217;d see every day across industries.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then came the pandemic in early 2020, and everything changed. Offices shut down overnight, and companies had to figure out new ways to keep business going while keeping people safe. This massive shift sparked a huge rise in remote work \u2014 <\/span><b>a change that happened faster than anyone expected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2021, just a year into the pandemic, <\/span><b>remote work had skyrocketed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across nearly all major industries. In many cases, the share of people working from home increased by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/btn\/volume-13\/remote-work-productivity.htm\"><b>more than 30 percentage points<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared to 2019. Some sectors made the transition faster and more fully than others, especially those where most of the work could be done online.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when restrictions eased in 2022 and offices reopened, remote work didn\u2019t just vanish. Although some workers did return to physical offices, the number of remote workers <\/span><b>remained much higher than before the pandemic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in nearly every industry. Davis, Nick Bloom, and Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Barrero) tracks the number of paid workdays performed from home versus on-site. Their data shows a clear story over time:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, before COVID, only about <\/span><b>5\u20137% of paid workdays<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were done from home.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the <\/span><b>2020 lockdowns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that share shot up to roughly <\/span><b>60% of workdays<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By <\/span><b>2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, things have settled into a stable pattern at around <\/span><b>25% of paid workdays<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worked from home.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So yes, remote work has dropped from the emergency peak, but it is <\/span><b>still more than three times higher<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than before the pandemic. Working from home a couple of days a week is now a normal part of many office jobs, not a rare perk.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same research group runs the <\/span><b>Global Survey of Working Arrangements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which looks at work-from-home patterns across many countries. On average, workers now report about <\/span><b>1.3 days per week<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> working from home. For college-educated employees, that also works out to <\/span><b>roughly a quarter of their workdays<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happening at home instead of in the office.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK sits even higher. That\u2019s because big organizations usually need to fill a wider variety of roles, many of which are highly specialized. To find the right people for those jobs, they often have to search outside of their local area, sometimes across the country or even internationally. Offering remote work helps them cast that wider net.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But geography plays just as big of a role. The preference for remote, hybrid, or in-office work changes quite a bit depending on the region. In <\/span><b>North America<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/click.zoom.com\/navigating-the-future-of-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaders tend to prefer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> employees working from the office more than in other parts of the world. On the flip side, the <\/span><b>Asia-Pacific (APAC)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> region shows the strongest lean toward fully remote work. Meanwhile, <\/span><b>Western Europe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is leading the way when it comes to hybrid setups, combining remote and in-office work in a way that fits with their long-standing focus on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparethemarket.com\/mortgages\/content\/achieve-a-work-life-balance-working-from-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work-life balance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/click.zoom.com\/navigating-the-future-of-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoom\u2019s findings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that while hybrid is the most common model globally, there\u2019s no single approach that fits everyone. Instead, companies are adjusting their work strategies to fit their specific culture, industry, and team needs.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee preferences also play a big part in shaping these decisions. Gallup\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/401384\/indicator-hybrid-work.aspx#ite-510917\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hybrid Work Indicator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that about <\/span><b>50% of full-time workers in the U.S.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have jobs that could be done remotely.
