style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Productivity is all about how much work people get done in a certain amount of time, and it plays a big role in how well businesses and economies perform. In 2024, though, <\/span><b>global productivity didn\u2019t grow much<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, growth was still <\/span><b>pretty slow and uneven<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the world.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the latest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/en\/publications\/oecd-compendium-of-productivity-indicators-2025_b024d9e1-en\/full-report\/insights-on-productivity-developments-in-2024_c4061fb7.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data from the OECD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, labour productivity across 40 countries only went up by <\/span><b>0.4% in 2024<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s a slight improvement from 2023, but still <\/span><b>much lower than before the pandemic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It shows that global labor productivity growth bounced back to about 1.5% in 2024, after nearly zero growth in 2022 and 2023. Still, this figure is lower than the pre-pandemic average <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee productivity statistics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 1.8% for 2015\u201319.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c590e02 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c590e02\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Regional employee productivity trends<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-31c2b20 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"31c2b20\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>Europe <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overall, productivity also grew by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/en\/publications\/oecd-compendium-of-productivity-indicators-2025_b024d9e1-en\/full-report\/insights-on-productivity-developments-in-2024_c4061fb7.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about <\/span><b>0.4%<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the results were very mixed. Smaller countries like <\/span><b>Finland, Luxembourg, and Croatia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw big gains, with productivity growth above 2.5%. But large economies like <\/span><b>Germany and Italy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> actually saw their productivity shrink. Looking at the longer-term trend, the euro area has only improved by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/press\/economic-bulletin\/focus\/2024\/html\/ecb.ebbox202406_01~9c8418b554.en.html\"><b>0.9% since 2019<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is far behind the <\/span><b>6.7% productivity growth in the U.S.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the same period. Europe\u2019s slower recovery is linked to strict COVID lockdowns, the 2022 energy crisis, and slower adoption of digital tools in some sectors.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>North America<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the average productivity growth in 2024 was just <\/span><b>0.2%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 but that average hides a big gap. The <\/span><b>United States<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw strong gains, with labor productivity rising by <\/span><b>1.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to the OECD, and even higher (+2.3%) according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2025\/productivity-up-2-3-percent-in-2024.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These gains helped make up for previous dips during the pandemic. In contrast, <\/span><b>Canada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw a slight decline in productivity, and <\/span><b>Mexico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fell even more, which pulled the overall regional average <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee productivity statistics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> down.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why is the U.S. doing better? A few reasons stand out. U.S. businesses have been quicker to adopt <\/span><b>new technologies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including AI. Their labor market is more flexible, and many companies made smart changes during the pandemic to improve how they work. In fact, productivity went up in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2025\/productivity-up-2-3-percent-in-2024.htm\"><b>48 out of 50 U.S. states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which shows how widespread the gains have been.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Asia\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> productivity grew only by about <\/span><b>0.2%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2024, according to the OECD. Countries like <\/span><b>Korea and Israel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made modest progress, but <\/span><b>Japan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slipped slightly into negative growth. While Asia is home to some of the world\u2019s fastest-growing economies, this year\u2019s data shows that there\u2019s still work to be done, especially in adopting digital tools and improving work processes in more traditional industries.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, <\/span><b>South America<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw the <\/span><b>strongest productivity growth of any region in 2024<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with an average of about <\/span><b>1.2%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most of that came from <\/span><b>Chile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which had a particularly good year. Thanks to tools like generative AI, companies are finding new ways to work faster and smarter.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/content\/dam\/ey-unified-site\/ey-com\/en-in\/services\/ai\/aidea\/2025\/01\/ey-the-aidea-of-india-2025-how-much-productivity-can-genai-unlock-in-india.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EY survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>India\u2019s IT industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that AI tools could boost productivity by <\/span><b>up to 45% over the next five years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially in software development and consulting. In fact, productivity in software development alone could go up by 60%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, sectors that use AI the most are seeing the biggest benefits. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/issues\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-and-productivity-report.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 PwC report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that productivity in AI-heavy industries is <\/span><b>nearly five times higher<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than in those that haven\u2019t adopted it yet.
